Roy F. Smith was born in 1910 and grew up in Roane County, West Virginia. He followed the lesson of the elementary school and after he worked as an technician’s car. Roy get married Marjorie Smith.
Pvt.Roy F. Smith was assigned to the B Company of 325th GIR. On 29 March 1942, he joined the army at Fort Thomas in Newport, Kentucky. He participated in combat in Sicily, Italy.
Then, the 325th GIR unit forming part of the 82nd Airborne Division was sent to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy. June 7 at 6:30am, gliders take off from England towards Normandy and 9:00am, the first gliders landing. During the fighting of June 9, 1944, Roy F Smith was injured. He was evacuated to a hospital in England.
Once established, he participated in combat in Holland during Operation Market Garden.
In December 1944, while the 82nd is at rest after the hard fighting in Holland, the Germans launched their major offensive in the Belgium Ardennes. Soon, the 82nd Airborne is sent into the northern side of Werbomont. The 325th GIR dug its positions at a crossroads near the de Fraiture. During the fierce fighting that followed, Pfc Roy Smith was seriously injured.
Again, he was transferred to a hospital in England. Unfortunately, February 12, 1945, he died of his injuries.
