Dale Atwood was born in 1923 in a poor
family in Lynd Minnesota. He died on June 6th, 1944 during the airborne
operation in Normandy.
He was a Private in Company A of the 506th
Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne.
He was the 3rd of a family of 9 children.
His father was an alcoholic, Dale often
fought with him. He was ready to do anything to leave the city.
At 17 years old, in 1940, he joined the
army. He joined several training centers before integrating the 506th PIR, of
the 101st Airorne.
The circumstance of his death is not well
known, apparently he was on the road. An enemy vehicle arrived at the level of
the bend where he was standing. Dale Atwood was supposed to stop it with a
firing of bazooka. But before Atwood had the time to fire, German shot him down.
These facts were brought back by Amos West, the radio of A Company in 1994.
Private Dale Atwood is buried in the
American cemetery of Normandy, in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. Plot E, Row 17, Grave
27.
